Blown Insulation

May 30th, 2008

We were 'informed' that the blown insulation had been put in the attic. Not one to take anything at face value, Andreas went up into the attic with a ruler. I egged him on of course.

Sure enough, right by the attic access hatch it was nice and thick and fluffy. The required 10.6 inches (for an R40 value) covered only about 1/3 of surface area of the attic. The rest was between 4 & 7 inches deep.

Ring, ring...oh mr contractor man...

Bonfire of the Vanities

May 30th, 2008

While Andreas was inspecting the insulation, Lianne was unpacking the guest bath vanity and the Master Bath vanity.

After a 2 month wait for delivery of the second one (no, not normal) she was hoping for no more issues! Luckily, they both fit in the designated places; however one piece of the guest bath was not installed - a slide-out drawer unit in the tall closet of the guest vanity. Also the drawers in the lower middle unit of the master bath vanity have the wrong drawer rail system installed.

It never seems to be easy with these darn vanities.

However, at least now there is a sense of what they look like!

Switch Plates

May 28, 2008

The Electrician has returned...well actually this is another electrician but that's a story best left untold.

Now we have paint (almost) complete, the electrician was very diligently going around installing light bulbs in our 2083 pot lights, as well as switch and outlet plates.

It's a small thing, but it just means one more step towards completion! Actually having power would also help...but we are told that's next week. Or maybe the week after.

We are now about 11 weeks past our original completion date.

Tweety

While our eaves under the roof have been open for so long, we have become akin to a purple martin bird house.

We have no less than six bird nests in the attic. Some are pigeon. Here are a couple recently spotted by Andreas when he was up there checking on the pot light seals.

Right corner of this picture is the tell tell pile of nesting twigs & the light shining in is the entrance/exit - daylight showing.

This one is more obvious

Wild Mushrooms and Cable Knit Sweaters

May 26, 2008

Shots of the paint going on. It's almost shocking to see after all the months of gray drywall! So far Lianne's not happy with the Wild Mushroom against the Stonehouse. However, she is willing to wait and see what it looks like with more than one coat.

Here is the Wild Mushroom colour in the stair area and upstairs hall

The Cable Knit colour in the Master Bed & Bath

Random shot of Andreas & Jesse amongst the painted walls

The painters actually also accidentally painted the basement bathroom in cable knit. Oops! They've since repainted it in the requested Cloud White!

The first sign of colour...

Wednesday May 21, 2008

Turns out the painters went to Montreal for the weekend and didn't make it back until well past the weekend.

Also we are impatiently waiting the return of the stucco people - because they need to install the scaffolding, at which point we call the structural engineer in to approve the set up. This is for the skinny space between us and our neighbour to the south where the stucco people need to use her roof to support the scaffolding. Then our builder needs to take the engineer's approval letter over to the Ministry of Labour who currently have a stop work order on the stucco due to worker safety concerns. This stop work order was issued in mid-March and we've been waiting ever since to get the stucco completed.

Today, however, there was progress with the painting. After selecting 3 colours for the whole house from the one inch by two inch colour chips, it came alive on the walls. Lianne specifically did not want a beige box so the three shades we chose were (Benjamin Moore) Cable Knit, Stonehouse and Wild Mushroom. Not that we're using BM paints, of course not. However, those are the colours and we were limited to a small number of different colours. It's more difficult than it sounds.

Here, Stonehouse hits the walls of the main floor kitchen/family room...and well, actually the whole main floor.

Cloud White

Friday May 15th, 2008

So many shades of white, who knew?

Doors and trim are being painted semi-gloss. They've been sprayed instead of brushed as I am sure it is faster...but it also leaves a really nice finish. Ceilings are also being done in 'cloud white', flat finish.

If you squint, you can see the different colour of cloud white on the baseboards as
compared to the white of the primer coat on the wall

Big White Box

Tuesday May 13, 2008

The house now has (mostly) a coat of primer over all the walls and trim. It looks a bit like a hospital...or insane asylum.

Here is the main floor - when looking towards the front of the house

Trim on the stairs, in progress

The skylight

Lianne standing against the back wall of the main floor - in between the sliding patio doors and the window in the family room...(note it's warm enough now to be in short sleeves. We left the house in short sleeves last August!)

Prep for Painting

Friday May 9th, 2008

The painters are coming, the painters are coming!

House is being prepped for painting and we had to get Slava the plumber in to move the location of the kitchen pot-filler.

Here he is talking to our builder.

Kitchen pick-up

While we were away we received a phone call from IKEA demanding that we pick up our order 'no later than Saturday May 3rd'.

Since we were on a southern Caribbean island that day, fat chance.

We called IKEA in a panic once we eventually got the message - also a bit angry as we had previously arranged with them to hold it until the 15th of May. Turns out they routinely make these types of calls to lazy picker-uppers and must have missed that ours was okay to be there. In any case, Andreas went out to the IKEA with our builder & the builder's truck to pick everything up. Since the house is so delayed, we are storing our entire kitchen in the builder's garage. 139 pieces! Of course, it is IKEA after all so it takes up no room at all.

I dread the day we have to actually assemble and install it all...

Glass Shower Doors installed

Monday April 21, 2008 - Monday May 5, 2008 Small Blog Hiatus...we got married!

House looks kinda like nothing got done...however, we were excited to see that the Magnolia survived it's de-limbing last fall and bloomed beautifully!

Yay!

Our glass shower enclosures were delivered and installed...gorgeous!
