Floor Sanding

Wednesday June 4th, 2008

Andreas and I are barely speak to each other for more than three sentences at a time before voices are raised :) At least we recognize the stress & usually point it out so as not to *always* be at each others throats.

The blown insulation guys came back & filled in the low spots.

Someone said, when the floors get finished you are close to completion.

Ha I say, but still it is nice to see them being done. Today we had a Sergei and another Russian. Sergei is the team lead but unfortunately speaks little english. He is very apologetic, and luckily we had the ever-present Igor on hand to translate.

We thought that Sergei was supposed to provide some stained boards in a few colours for us to choose from, but this was not what he understood. He thought we would provide for him the stain we wanted. After much confusion it was determined that we would go to Home Depot, bring back two or three small tins of stain. Sergei would put them on some spare pieces of hardwood and we would decide from there.

Ironically, we had already decided which colour we wanted. It's on the floors of a friend of ours, but we could not find it anywhere at any big box hardware stores.

I spent the better part of the day running around visiting hardwood flooring stores, at the suggestion of the aforementioned friend, to find this particular stain. Eventually I did find it at, of all places, an electrical company.

Since you can't buy a sample size, I took the gallon back to the house and sure enough it was exactly right. We didn't even look at any other colours!

Meanwhile, the guys sanded the whole floor, coated it in a wood-filler of sorts and sanded it again.

Tomorrow, stain! To get a preview, I took the sample board into every room with hardwood. :)

While all of this is going on, Andreas and Igor are out on an epic trip to find stone to match the side of the house (semi-successful) and they also dropped in to pick up the toilets. Since we can't get in the house for a few days once the stain/topcoat goes down they just took all the toilets into the basement for storage.
