Quick, door hardware! Counter tops! Light Fixtures!

Tuesday June 17th, 2008

Today we slept in and since there were no urgent calls to 'go to Elmsdale right now' we started the day with some shopping...ordered our kitchen sink and 3 bathroom sinks upstairs. We also ventured out to several stores to look at light fixtures and the longest of the day was the door hardware experience.

Off we go to find this place that our builder recommended. He says, 'ask for Mo and pay cash'. Indeed. First we find it ( a good 45min drive). Then we go in and look around a 15 x 15 showroom while waiting at least an hour for the one salesperson that appears to be working. He's not Mo and Mo is not available. However, he was very helpful and knocked the price a bit for the cash payment as well. In the end I think we saved a couple of hundred off of the local Home Depot prices for the exact same product. Worth the trip? I still say it's a maybe as it was a good three hours of time whereas the local 'Depot would have taken a half hour, max. Plus, with the cost of gas these days.....

Next on the list was counter. We are looking at granite/quartz (a.k.a Silestone/ CaesarStone) or a combination of the two. Originally I wanted the combo but Andreas was leaning towards all granite.

We went over to the place our builder suggested and quickly learned that they are nought but a fabricator. What we didn't realize (weren't told) is that you have to pick out your granite slab from an Importer and then tell your fabricator who cuts & polishes it.

Once we learned this, we drove to an importer. Close to closing time, unfortunately, however they were very patient and explained a lot to us. Nothing really caught our eye other than a piece called 'Yellow River' but even then it was iffy.

So, despite all the effort we came away from the importer empty-handed. They were only one of many, so we'll try again soon. The biggest problem we face is that they are at least a 45 minute drive away and they are only open 9 - 5 most days. Not the *most* convenient.
